The 2008 CY Awards ceremony wrapped up it’s week long celebration with the awards show on Saturday night, handing out all the awards to the winning citizens. A transcript of the podium chatlog, put together by Karten, is available at AWPortals and shows the top 3 nominees and eventual winners. Congrats to all the winners, and thank you to the CY team for putting on a great party.
Congrats on the Cy there, Syn. :p
Your typo of HAIRSQUARS will be forever commemorated. *shakes head*

Only 200 people? I wonder if that’s been the lowest attendance for them in a while…
Is there ever even 200 in the Universe? Yet we get 200 for the awards, lol
Personally, I will be honest in saying that I am very split about the awards.
It was an amazing work of art that flowed smoothly and was well thought out. Everything was timely organized, you could pretty much know the time by what award they were giving out. The community atmosphere was ecstatic, and there were surely many folks behind the curtain allowing for all the interactions to occur. The CYs still represent CommunitY, and the bonds we share. To see so many people online, united together is truly a sight to be had given discussions about virtual worlds dieing off. Syntax was saying things on the fly in his acceptance speech, but I even had someone today reference how true he was in saying that many have grown up on AW, and consider it certainly a home to care about and respect.
On the flip side, as a former Cy Rules head I was rather disappointed with where things have gone from the origins with AlphaBit Phalpha that were passed on to the new team. I can understand the need to reopen nominations to allow past winners to win again, however it was once a core fundamental of the Cy Awards to not allow members of the Cy team to win. There are too many conflicts of interest when the people advertising the show to their friends are up for nomination themselves, and the team should be focused on the event instead of their personal benefits from it. Being on the Cy team is distinction and a sign of dedication in itself. Unfortunately, as we saw yesterday, a great many (if not majority) of the winners were on the Cy team. Is it an awards show or now more than ever a popularity contest?
I think that’s just a reflection of the downturn in community participation as of late. With less and less people coming to AW, you’d eventually run out of people to nominate if the “no repeats” rule was still in effect. In addition, with less people comes even less *motivated* people, which means less people that are *worth* nominating in the first place.
Thus, the kind of people who would be most likely to volunteer for the CY Awards Committee are also the people most likely to win the very awards they are promoting. Granted, it still smacks of nepotisim and favoritism (and it always will unless they enact an “Academy Awards”-style system), but I think it’s more just the lack of any better choices. :-/
It was pretty good seeing as how they are only between 70 – 110 users in universe at any time I’m online. It was especially awesome this year, because chrispeg fixed the bug where like 3/4th’s of the avatars didnt even show up as 2D renders. This time, you could see the entire crowd up in the stands and on the floor… all decorated in full CAV glory. It was quite the sight.. check out some of the pictures Desireless took.
Baro and I stand out like sore thumbs.
