AW 5.1 Beta has been released by AWI and features physics which is a landmark implementation for the program. You can check out the changes at the Activewiki and if you are a beta user, login to update your client.

This is groundbreaking news for AW. Might be able to get over the ol’ builders block and get super-motivated again.
This feature has been extremely exciting and fun. There’s quite a few bugs and some oddities, but hopefully they’ll be worked out before public release. This has so much potential to revolutionize building like V4s/scale.

Does it seem like the new 5.1 beta browser renders faster than before? Just seems quicker overall and I’m loving that responsivess. (Yes, my account was fixed. Thank you Tom!)
I’ve only been using the new browser for a few minutes, but I also did notice that the dialog boxes, when resized over the viewport, seem to trail bits and pieces until you release the mouse button. I assume thats a side effect of making the browser more responsive.
Well, didn’t take long to figure out the collider command, but I am still trying to figure out how to use the addforce command if anyone has some suggestions. So far really cool. (edit: I figured out the addforce command, thanks)

there was a bridge made of rope that someone made crossing a river or something, I thought it’d be really neat if someone applied some forces to that when you walked across it the bridge would crumble beneath

Soon as we get joints, we could build things like rope bridges that swing and react more like real bridges.

Yes. Simple vehicles, an upcoming feature for a new beta release, requires the use of them.

Chrispeg says yes. They’re necessary to implement vehicles, which he definitely says will happen. So joints come as a side effect of vehicles.
And so are joints part of actual objects, i.e. within the object file itself, or can it be used as a command somehow?

This would completely beat anything SL can do with physics.
Except synchronizing it with everyone present!
SL has that and it’s terrible!
The consequence of syncing stuff up is stuff breaks!
You can sync stuff up well enough with global tags though. So it’s really a compromise between both extremes.
I mean in the SL sense. SL syncs all movement, resulting in laggy movement for all!
Also, the physics just outright breaks. Try making a chain out of tori and it just explodes.

Anyone have any really good displays of what physics is capable of?
The physics has changed quite a lot. The tower I made won’t stand up for long simply by walking on the top floor
Also, go to the right angle offices , or fly around other object-heavy buildings. I’ve noticed that the textures don’t load for some (though the scale does). If the texture is, for instance, back3gnd mask=semitrans13, some objects will have it, while others won’t.
