The release date of the long-awaited Active Worlds 4.2 was publicly announced on the ActiveWiki today by lead programmer chrispeg. As it stands now, the proposed date is Monday, April 21st. This release should include many of the heavily talked-about features such as Custom Avatars, picture mipmapping, upgraded signs (fonts) and outgoing telegram storage.
I gotta ask someone on the inside whether or not matfx will mipmap too.. :/
?______? @ the lack of anyone from sw city being on the beta
Heck, at least comit should have been in there
Send an e-mail to beta@activeworlds.com to apply. Like seriously, Syn, Comit, you guys are prime candidates and anyone worth their salt will realise that. Show whoever reads them (Chrispeg prolly) that you’re technically able and have done research regarding AW and performance and stuff. Sell yourself!
I want on the beta.
If jacob can do it, I can do it
You need to send him your PC specs and a list of your AW skillset in order for him to not delete the e-mail on sight. But since we’re from SW City, well, let’s just see if that even matters.
False. Everyone gets 4.2 on the 21st.
Didn’t Tom say they were just enlarging the beta team and not making it a public open beta?
EDIT: Oop, Tom was just misinformed. Carry on.
Since CAVs are universal, does that mean that AlphaWorld will be able to reap the benefits of a new version

Not if the world disables CAVs (much like they can disable PAVs)

[04/18/08 17:58:57] [Syntaxx]: You can’t, you are a tourist.
[04/18/08 17:59:07] [Syntaxx]: It’s stupid, I know.

Tourists should get some sort of cav trial.
Or a bigger selection of avatars/preselected cavs.
Everyone should get to build a CAV.. but the problem with that is that the system was probably setup so that the CAV’s are stored somewhere using your citizen number. Tourists, having no citizen number, are screwed straight up. They should at least get to build a CAV, but not have it saved I say. Just so they can at least see the system in action.
Of course, this is only my solution to the storage problem.. if it was up to me everyone would be able to use and save their CAV at will, even tourists. Once people have established their identity, maybe they would be more interested in getting involved with the community.
Bingo
People need to be able to establish some sort of root in a program… running around with a generic avatar just makes you feel so disconnected and doesn’t give the user anything to remember as an original experience. I really, really thought the AWI folk would see this opportunity and let it loose onto the community.. a real shame. :/
I think the tourist CAVs should be saved client side, or something like that. Give them some benefits of the CAVs, but without the portability which makes it more citizeny. Or even place a limit to how long that CAV can remain saved. Like a day or two. But knowing AWI, tourists won’t even get the option of using the normal avs. But then again, if they could, how would we tell them from Jag? *shrug*
To bad i wont get to see it.My bro got me banned if killing was legal ided kill him for this.
^ Quoted for the books
*confused at banned person* But yeah client side saved CAVS would be okay for tourists I guess, just loads the PAV values from a file on their computer into a table with their session number when they leave it’s removed simple but AW has made it so it is saved for citizen’s online and linked to their citizen number.
