Apparently AWI has launched a new app on the popular social networking site Facebook by using an ActiveX control, as mentioned in this press release. You can see it in action here. Interesting! I wonder if AW will start having more than 100 people online at a time now if catches on?
Pretty awesome that
So presumably one can just run it from within the profile?
Yea its pretty awesome that they are using an ActiveX control that has been out since AW was in its infancy.
Everyone is making such a big deal over this when its nothing special at all. >_< Any schmuck with a computer can make their own facebook app.
Heh, using that argument nothing would be special.
It’s all in how you apply the technology you have.
So, it’s more or less a big deal because at the most recent trade show a month ago some “futurist” was going on about how someday a virtual world will have its own Facebook app and it’s already been done.
Pretty cool that
Not pretty cool it. It only works in IE. That makes it useless for at least half the people I know, including myself. And there’s no teleport link to SW City.
Exactly. ActiveX is a technology on the decline. lol @ JP talking about “standards” in the press release. If AW cared about “standards” they might think about supporting the new cross-platform avatar standard IBM and SL are developing.
Even Firefox plugins are closer to a standard than ActiveX is, since they’re open; but the most interoperable solution would be to use Java and not use a plugin at all. Yes, Java is annoying; but so is being asked if you want to run an ActiveX control when you visit someone’s Facebook profile.
Never mind the marketing-speak, this is about one thing only: another hit-and-run on the public’s bank accounts, a small boost in AWI’s profits so that they can keep going for another couple of years. That’s how they do things. They did it with the cit price increase, they did it with 3D Homepages (lol 3D Homepages) and they’re doing it with a crappy Facebook app.
I can’t get it to work, for whatever reason. I have IE7 installed on my machine which I rarely ever use…so, I dunno.
The first activeX control like this was released in 1996
That press release was fake, you know.

According to JP, they were part of the summit, Rossy.
