SW City

Races

Discover the fascinating inhabitants of SW City who call this chaotic metropolis home. It’s the kind of place where it’s just another Tuesday when ancient cave-dwellers commute alongside Martian immigrants and folks made of living cloud. These remarkable races have built a thriving city where cutting-edge technologies meet timeless tradition and every street corner tells a different story.

Local Races

Nimbusians

Children of the Air

These fluffy, short-statured folks are made of water vapor (science is weird, okay?). Once enslaved but now free, Nimbusians are all about the finer things: art, music, philosophy, and having a good time.

Their floating kingdom of Nimbus Land hovers majestically above James River, ruled by King Nimbus XXXIV. You’ll encounter traditional “Pures,” sketchy 6th District mobsters, and everyday Nimbusians just trying to make it in the big city. Fair warning though—they’re basically living moisture, so campfires can make them a little nervous.

Submins

Servants of the Earth

These cone-helmeted cave-dwellers have built an entire civilization beneath your feet, with hidden nations tucked away in volcanic caves and mountain depths.

You’ll encounter Stonemasters running daily affairs, Gearmasters keeping volatile technology from exploding, miners working the depths, and Beermasters serving cold ones after hard work. They worship Manzang, god of Earth, and speak a language so heavy on consonants that even when they talk in Common, they sound like they’re gargling gravel.

Velosians

Children of Fire

Meet the Velosians—or rather, what’s left of them. These reptilian fire-worshippers once ruled Velothi Island with advanced technology far beyond anything seen today, harnessing volcanic energy from their underground city of Velos.

In 1120 CE, their volcano erupted catastrophically and the entire race simply vanished—no bodies, no survivors, just empty ruins. Now their abandoned cities draw treasure hunters hoping to uncover the secrets of this lost civilization.

Common Races

Birdes

Bird-Enhanced

Genetically enhanced birds created by the Circle of Fire Corporation in 1996, Birdes are smart enough to hold actual conversations and have become valued members of society. These feathered folks serve as friendly greeters, message couriers, and all-around helpful citizens throughout SW City.

You’ll probably run into Flint, the famous Birde who’s been welcoming visitors to Town Square Park for years—he’s got stories to tell and probably knows more about what’s happening around the city than most humans do.

Grays

Aliens with Admin Skills

Alien visitors from Mars who arrived in Alphaworld back in 1996 when Circle of Fire’s new space technology opened up contact with hundreds of other planets. Sometimes called “Offlanders,” these extraterrestrial immigrants have spread throughout Alphaworld and become part of everyday life.

Keep an eye out for Manager Piers J. Anthony, who runs the Southern Highlands area—apparently interplanetary management skills translate pretty well to local politics.

Humans

Conquerors of Everything (Including Themselves)

Humans form the majority population of Alphaworld and have been the driving force behind its greatest civilizations. From tribal origins, they built the mighty Scarabian Empire that conquered the entire island in the 1640s until the Civil Revolt of 1885 brought it crashing down.

Today, humans have helped SW City become a sprawling democratic metropolis governed by Mayor Shane Syntax—a bionic-suited billionaire who survived a near-fatal skiing accident thanks to Martian surgery. Humans have proven that sometimes you need to lose an empire to build something better.

Minor Races

Bob-Ombs

Boomers

Explosive little creatures about the size of Nimbusians who somehow made their way from the Mushroom Kingdom to SW City. These walking bombs come in various colors including black, dark blue, and pink, each waddling around on tiny legs, some with a wind-up key sticking out of their backs.

Most Bob-ombs are surprisingly friendly despite being literal living explosives—they’ll chat, help out with tasks, and generally act like normal citizens until something winds them up. It’s probably best not to startle them at parties, though the fireworks displays are admittedly spectacular.

Christouses

Weirdicus Hermiticus

Strange, stalky humanoid creatures who’ve made the Mazenda Caves on Hyokia Island their permanent home. “The Chris,” as they’re often called, are a low-intelligence tribe with their own incomprehensible language and absolutely zero interest in joining polite society above ground.

They prefer their dark, underground lifestyle and seem perfectly content keeping to themselves in the caves, emerging only rarely and confusing anyone unfortunate enough to encounter them.

Kyberosoba

Lords of Last Resort

Short, stocky creatures from the Outerlands who turned to cybernetic augmentation after an environmental disaster nearly wiped them out. These tech-scavenging survivors spent generations raiding settlements just to stay alive until they made contact with the mining settlement of Zlata Ves.

What started as mutual suspicion turned into an unlikely partnership—now they work the mines alongside humans, sharing power storage technology in exchange for citizenship and survival.

Simbusians

The Directionally Challenged

A small, simple tribal race that lives on the tiny Hurutulughunuga Isle (mercifully shortened to Huru Isle) in the far eastern Irenic Ocean.

These fish mask-wearing islanders are known for their layers of tribal clothing and one absolutely mind-bending ability: they can wave their arm in one direction while their spear moves in the complete opposite direction. Whether this defies physics or they’ve just mastered some ancient throwing technique, nobody’s quite sure—but it definitely makes them interesting neighbors to have around.
